Frequently asked questions
Clear answers before you decide.
You do not need to know the right terminology or be ready to book. These answers are a starting point, and you can always ask us about your own circumstances privately.
Getting started
Do I need a referral?+
No. You can contact us directly and self-refer. We also accept referrals from healthcare teams, charities, therapists, social prescribers and community organisations, with your agreement.
What happens at a consultation?+
Your initial consultation is free and usually lasts around 30 minutes. We talk about what has brought you to us, your health, your skin, your goals and any adjustments that would help you feel comfortable.
We explain suitable options, realistic limitations, likely costs and aftercare. Treatment is not carried out during the consultation and there is no obligation to book.
How do I know which treatment I need?+
You do not need to decide before contacting us. We will assess the area and explain whether areola restoration, scar camouflage, MCA scar revision or another next step may be appropriate.
Can you guarantee my result?+
No ethical practitioner can guarantee a specific result. Skin, scars, pigment retention and healing vary from person to person. We will give you a realistic assessment before you consent to treatment.
Suitability and treatment
When is a scar ready for treatment?+
Scars generally need to be fully healed and mature before restorative treatment. The right timing depends on the scar, your health and any ongoing hospital care. We may ask for medical clearance or recommend waiting longer.
Can I be treated while I am still under hospital care?+
Possibly, but treatment may need to be delayed. Please tell us about any ongoing investigation, treatment, surgery or follow-up. We may ask your GP, consultant or specialist team to confirm that it is appropriate to proceed.
Does restorative tattooing hurt?+
Sensation varies by person and treatment area. Some people feel very little in areas affected by surgery, while others feel scratching, pressure or tenderness. We check in throughout and you can pause or stop at any time.
How many sessions will I need?+
This varies. Restorative tattooing often needs more than one session because colour and detail are built gradually and can change as the skin heals. We will explain the likely treatment plan at consultation.
Will the colour stay the same?+
Pigment softens as it heals and can fade over time. Skin type, sun exposure, health, lifestyle and the treatment area all affect retention. A perfecting session or future colour refresh may be recommended.
Healing and aftercare
What is healing like?+
Temporary redness, tenderness, swelling, dryness or light scabbing can be normal, depending on the treatment. The area may look darker or more defined at first before settling. You will receive treatment-specific written aftercare.
Can I work after treatment?+
Many people can return to usual light activities, but this depends on the treatment area and your work. You may need to avoid friction, heavy exercise, swimming, saunas, sun exposure or anything that contaminates the area while it heals.
What if I am worried while healing?+
Contact us in writing if you are unsure whether your healing is progressing normally. Please do not send photographs or detailed medical information by ordinary email unless we have asked you to and explained how to share them securely.
We may be able to help you understand whether your symptoms are commonly associated with healing, but we cannot diagnose an infection or medical complication remotely. If redness or swelling is spreading, symptoms are worsening, or you develop increasing heat, pain, discharge, fever, chills or feel generally unwell, contact your GP or NHS 111 promptly. Call 999 for severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, sudden swelling of the mouth or throat, collapse or loss of consciousness.
Costs, funding and bookings
How much does treatment cost?+
The cost depends on the treatment, size and complexity of the area, and the number of sessions likely to be needed. Our standard treatment contributions are listed on the Prices page.
Your initial consultation is free. We will explain the expected treatment cost and any supported contribution options before you decide whether to proceed.
View treatment prices →What is the Supported Contribution Model?+
Our Supported Contribution Model helps make treatment accessible to people who may not be able to afford the full standard contribution.
Depending on available funding, places may be fully funded or offered at a contribution level of 20%, 40%, 60% or 100%. People paying the full contribution can also choose to make an additional Pay It Forward donation towards another person’s care.
Supported places are subject to available funding, clinical suitability and appointment availability.
How do I ask for a supported place?+
You can ask about support when you contact us or during your consultation. Tell us which contribution level would make treatment realistically accessible for you, and we will explain the options currently available.
There is no intrusive financial assessment and you will not be asked to prove that you are deserving of care. All funding conversations are private and handled without judgement. Requesting support does not guarantee a funded place because availability depends on the funding held by the CIC at that time.
What happens if I need to cancel?+
Please give at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or rearrange your appointment.
Treatment appointments cancelled or rearranged with less than 48 hours’ notice may be charged up to 50% of the treatment price.
Missed appointments and no-shows may be charged up to the full treatment price, reflecting the appointment time reserved, preparation already completed and the CIC’s resulting loss. If we are able to refill the appointment, any charge will be reviewed accordingly.
These terms apply to standard, subsidised and fully funded appointments because late cancellations also prevent another person from using that treatment time. We understand that genuine emergencies happen, so please contact us as soon as possible if something unexpected prevents you from attending.
Do I need to pay a deposit?+
A 10% non-refundable booking fee is required for self-funded and partly funded treatment. It is deducted from the amount you have agreed to contribute.
Clients receiving 100% funded treatment are asked for a £25 refundable attendance deposit. This rolls over through the agreed course of treatment and is returned after the final attended appointment.
If paying the attendance deposit would create genuine hardship, card details may instead be held securely through our approved booking or payment provider following a confidential discussion. Card details are never recorded or stored manually by Pigments In Positivity CIC.
The consultation itself is free. Fresha takes a nominal 1p booking-security payment so a payment method can be held securely for our attendance policy. If you attend, no further consultation charge is made. If you miss the appointment without attending, an additional £24.99 will normally be charged, bringing the total no-show charge to £25. Please give at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or rearrange.
Privacy, access and inclusion
Do I have to agree to photographs?+
Clinical photographs may be needed as part of your confidential treatment record, but using images for education, a portfolio, the website or social media requires separate explicit consent. We will explain each use clearly. You can say no to promotional use without affecting your care.
Is the service trans and non-binary inclusive?+
Yes. We welcome people of all genders, including people seeking restorative treatment after gender-affirming surgery. Chosen names are respected and pronouns are optional.
Can you make adjustments for disability or neurodivergence?+
Yes. Tell us what would help. Adjustments may include written communication, a quieter appointment, extra explanation, breaks, changes to lighting or sound, support with mobility, or more time to process decisions.
Can I bring someone with me?+
Please ask before your appointment. We protect privacy and keep the treatment space calm, but a support person may be agreed when this is helpful and safe.
Can I withdraw consent?+
Yes. Consent is ongoing, not a one-off signature. You can pause or withdraw consent at any point. The practitioner may also stop or defer treatment if continuing would not be safe or appropriate.
